E District gardai’s joy after helping to raise €25k for charity which helps children in Ireland with serious illnesses

KIND-hearted gardai have told of their joy after helping to raise €25,000 for the Little Blue Heroes charity.
The donations were made to the group – which aims to help the families of children across Ireland undergoing long-term medical treatment for serious illness – after 44 members of the gardai from the force’s E District in the capital cycled from Dublin to Kilkenny.
Officers from Donnybrook and Irishtown Garda stations – who also met Taoiseach Michael Martin – made the 120km journey on Thursday morning.
After arriving in Kilkenny, organiser Sgt Kieran O’Neill told how the group had been “overwhelmed” by the level of generosity.
Those who made online donations included people from Galway, Cork and Belfast.
Sgt O’Neill said: “We walked about doing something positive after lockdown and we came up with the decision to have a charity cycle ride for the Little Blue Heroes.
“I honestly thought we would make something around the €5,000 mark but to get €25,000 is just extraordinary.
“We can’t thank everyone enough for the kindness that they have shown towards a very worthwhile charity.
“Seeing the joy on the faces of the kids when we crossed the finishing line made it all worthwhile.”
